Eighteen Somerset Community College students were chosen as charter members of the new Student Ambassadors Program. These students will represent and promote the college at campus and community events, assist with recruiting efforts, campus tours and provide information about SCC to prospective students, school groups and the general public. The initial group consists of 18 SCC students from a variety of counties served by the College.

“The standards necessary to become a Somerset Community College Student Ambassador are very high,” said Dr. Jo Marshall, the President and CEO of SCC. “Our new Student Ambassadors are representative of all SCC students. They are a very talented group and I am proud of them.”

The Student Ambassadors serve for the whole academic year (fall and spring) and work 40 hours per semester. As compensation, they receive a 6-credit-hour tuition waiver per semester. The students receive training in professional etiquette, leadership, communication skills, and knowledge of SCC.

“This program gives students the opportunity to network with leaders in the community and serving as an ambassador is a wonderful learning experience for them,” said Melissa Morrison, who coordinates the program for SCC.

As part of the program, the students are provided with a “uniform” consisting of khaki pants, a dress shirt, a sports jacket, and a tie for men or a scarf for women. They sometimes wear a yellow Student Ambassador t-shirt for less formal occasions.

The selection process takes place during the Spring Semester each year. Students are required to submit an application for the program along with two letters of recommendation from a member of the SCC faculty or staff. If they meet the criteria, they are interviewed by a selection committee.

In order to qualify to become an SCC Student Ambassador, students must be currently enrolled at the College, maintain a 3.0 Grade Point Average, have a genuine interest in assisting others, reflect a positive attitude and enthusiasm, and have excellent interpersonal and communications skills.

According to Morrison, they must be able to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds, have the ability to speak in front of a group, be willing to work a flexible schedule, have a good work ethic and be punctual.

“These students are able to work independently or as a member of a team. They are friendly and outgoing, and they have a working knowledge of SCC procedures,” Morrison said.
