Fifth Annual SCC Teen Theatre Festival set for March 1
Somerset Community College will host its Fifth Annual Teen Theatre Festival on SCC’s Somerset Campus on Saturday, March 1. The one-day event is in its fifth year of offering middle and high school students from across the region a chance to attend drama workshops and performance competitions.
Registration for the event begins in Hal Rogers Student Commons lobby at 9:30 a.m. on March 1.
The event culminates in an awards ceremony where the top performances of the day take home “Outstanding Achievement” and “Best Performance” awards. The categories are divided into groups of students in 7th through 9th grades and students in 10th to 12th grades.
“It’s one of the most energy-packed days of the year for us,” stated SCC Theatre Coordinator Steve Cleberg. “Our college students and members of the community get to work with the next generation of theatre students. The excitement is always high. It’s an invigorating event.”
This year’s final round will be judged by three members of the faculty at three of Kentucky’s most respected four-year colleges and universities. Nancy Jones, the chair of the Theatre Arts Program at the University of Kentucky will serve as one of the finalists’ judges. Michael Hatton, a member of the theatre faculty at Northern Kentucky University will also serve as a judge for this showcase round. The assistant technical director of the Norton Center of the Arts, Will Johnston, will round out the adjudicating staff.
The SCC Teen Theatre Festival day begins with an orientation to the day’s events on the SCC Somerset Campus. Following this orientation, students go to various locations on the campus to audition for judges in the following performance categories: Dramatic Monologues, Comic Monologues, Theatrical Scene, Musical Solo and Open Scene. After lunch, participants will perform their auditions a second time for a different judge.
The second round of auditions is followed by a workshop sessions in either Improvisation or auditioning techniques.
After the workshop session, finalists from the preliminary rounds are announced and their audition pieces are performed in a showcase round before the judges and Festival audience.
Following the showcase round, a special performance by SCC’s Teen Theatre Company will entertain the audience. The event will conclude with an awards ceremony.
Registration for the event is $5.00 for non-competing participants and $10.00 for those who wish to compete for performance prizes.
