Accelerated Information Technology Certificate now available at Somerset Community College

Do you want to learn more about Information Technology but don’t have the time to attend classes during a regular 16-week college semester?

The Business and Information Technology Division at Somerset Community College may have an answer.  Recognizing the need for alternative delivery of Information Technology (IT) Training, SCC will be starting a series of classes designed to provide students with a broad range of IT experience in an accelerated alternative-delivery format, culminating in a certificate. This certificate could be the first step toward an Associate Degree in Information Technology.

The alternative delivery of classes is designed to utilize both classroom and on-line courses. Each class is scheduled in an abbreviated 8-week (bi-term) format instead of the traditional 16-week semester.  Some classes will be held in person while others will be offered on-line.

“We are trying to give students the opportunity to receive information technology training at times and with delivery options that are more convenient than the traditional 16-week, semester-based classes. If this program is successful, we would like to offer more courses in this format’” said Bruce Gover, the SCC Business and Information Technology Division Chair.

The IT Fundamentals Certificate covers a broad range of IT topics and prepares students to meet the growing demands of the information technology profession.

The SCC IT Fundamentals Certificate Program includes the following classes:

Introduction to Computers – a basic computing fundamentals course that includes hardware and software basics. Topics also include operating system fundamentals, the Internet, Web and E-mail, as well as Word Processing, Spreadsheet, Database and Presentation Graphics fundamentals.

Program Design and Development – a basic introductory computer programming concepts course. The course includes the design and development of computer programs by covering programming concepts and techniques common to all computer languages. Programming languages are used to illustrate the concepts.

Microcomputer Applications – an advanced computer applications class that covers expanded topics in word processing, spreadsheets, and database software.

Computer Software Maintenance – this course covers the maintenance and troubleshooting of computer workstation software, basic network set-up, Internet access and configuration of operating systems.

Computer Hardware Maintenance – this course covers the maintenance of computer hardware as well as PC construction, set-up and troubleshooting.

Networking Core Technologies – this course provides an overview of networking concepts and provides network connectivity and communications concepts with emphasis on local area networks (LAN).

Introduction to Database Design – the course introduces the standards for designing relational databases.

Web Site Design and Production – the course introduces the overall web site design process from start to finish. Topics include working with images, animation, video, and web design tools and applications.

Beginning-Level Programming Class – Student in this course will be required to complete a beginning-level programming course such as Visual Basic, Java, SQL, C/C++, Perl, or Javascript.

The IT Fundamentals Certificate Program is open to new students and to existing information technology students. Upon completion of the IT Fundamentals certificate, students could meet the requirements for an Associate Degree in Information Technology by completing an additional 23 credit-hours of a general education courses and approximately 25 credit-hours of specific information technology courses.

“One of the best things about this program is that it exposes students to a wide range of information technology topics. It provides a solid foundation from which the student can pursue more advanced study in IT. In addition, it is offered at times and using delivery formats that are flexible. It also provides an avenue for someone to begin an Associate’s Degree in Information Technology,” Gover said. “We are very excited about this new delivery format and look forward to expanding this format into other business and information technology program options.”
