Officials from Union College and Somerset Community College (SCC) gather to reaffirm existing program agreements and establish a new one in social work. Front row, from left: James M. Davis, Somerset Community College Counselor; Dr. Andelys Wood, Union College Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs; Lois McWhorter, SCC Associate Dean; Sharon Whitehead, SCC Dean of Arts and Sciences; Dr. Carolyn Payne, Chair of Union College’s Department of Business. Back row, from left: Jon Burlew, SCC Associate Dean; Dr. Sarah Hendrix, Director of Union College’s Social Work Program; Dr. Marcia Hawkins, Union College President; Dr. Tony Honeycutt, SCC Provost; Dr. Robert Armour, Chair of Union College’s Department of Criminal Justice.

Union College and Somerset Community College have worked jointly for several years to bring baccalaureate program opportunities to students who have completed associate degrees.

Those opportunities expanded by one this week, marking what Union College officials hope will be the beginning of a growth trend precipitated by partnering with the Kentucky Community and Technical College System.

On Monday afternoon in Union College’s Sharp Academic Center, officials from Union College and Somerset Community College met to approve a two-plus-two transfer agreement that leads to the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree in social work. This program joins existing agreements for degrees in criminal justice and in business administration. College officials also signed reaffirmation agreements for the programs currently in place.

Two-plus-two agreements are transfer initiatives that facilitate seamless transitions from community colleges into approved baccalaureate programs. Students who take advantage of these programs will attend their freshman and sophomore years at Somerset Community College while completing the bachelor’s degree at Union College.

Marcia Hawkins, Ph.D., president of Union College, is anxious bring other degree programs into the mix to increase the number of four-year degrees awarded locally.

"Earning a four-year degree often makes a significant difference in career advancement and serves as a milestone for personal growth," Hawkins said. "The two-plus-two programs are key in making this a reality for many young adults."

SCC to Host Open House April 13; FREE TUITION WAIVERS TO BE GIVEN AWAY

Please note: Preregistration is closed.
Tickets for the production are $4 each when purchased in advance at SCC’s box office which will be open for business on Monday, April 8. The box office will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Tickets are $6 each when purchased at the door.

This year, four short comedies will be performed by seven actors, most of them doing double duty, and interspersed with the comic stylings of John Alexander.

The first sketch of the evening focuses on a bizarre set of circumstances at an innocent evening of dining at a Chinese restaurant. You may want to reconsider opening your fortune cookie after viewing this hilarious short comedy. The cast for the short sketch entitled “Misfortune” by Mark Harvey Levine is made up of three SCC students Katie Lowe, James Rose and Caitlyn Wheeler. There are also appearances by Doug Silvers and Dana Floro.

The second comedy, “Architect” by Robert T. Fields takes a look at a meeting between a client and an architect. The meeting takes a comically surreal turn as the client reveals his identity and the mission he has planned for the architect. Aaron Whitehead and Chris Harris play the client and architect, respectively.

In the third short sketch entitled, “The Business Plan” by Philip Hall, two good old boys, Bo and Lester, become inspired by the possibility of going into business together. The role of Lester will be played by Doug Silvers. SCC student James Rose role will take the role of Bo.

The evening will conclude with a short sketch entitled, “Answer the Question, Iris” written by playwrights Stefanie DeLeo and Jenifer Menedis . The sketch takes place in a psychiatrist’s office where Iris, played by SCC student Katie Lowe, has come to Harry, played by Aaron Whitehead, for assistance. Doug Silver also appears in the sketch.

Tickets will go on sale on Monday, April 8. Contact Sherry Crabtree at (606) 451-6766 for more information. Credit cards and checks, made payable to Somerset Community College, are accepted.
Somerset Community College Assistant Professor of Art Darlene Libbey, back middle, served as the instructor for the 2013 Side-By-Side project. Here, Libbey works with the students on pastels.

Eight local artists recently teamed up with 11 local Eubank, Oak Hill, Pulaski and Burnside Elementary school students with mental and physical challenges to create a collaborative art exhibit entitled “Side-By-Side.” The resulting artwork will be on display at the Center for Rural Development in Somerset from Monday, April 1, until June 2. The art exhibit is free and open to the public.

The public is also invited to a free reception for the student artists and their local collaborators on Sunday, April 7, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Center for Rural Development.

Somerset Community College Assistant Professor of Art Darlene Libbey received a grant for the project from VSA, the Kentucky Arts Council and the Kennedy Foundation. This year, Side-By-Side sessions were held at Pulaski Elementary School in the art room of Delilah Young. As the Side-By-Side instructor, Libbey worked with the students to explore charcoal, collage, pastels and paint. Later, each student worked with a local artist to create collaborative painting. The collaborative piece, as well as one individual creation from each student, will be included in the Side-By-Side exhibit at The Center for Rural Development.

The 11 student artists are: Cade Hill, Oak Hill Elementary; Jacob Allen, Oak Hill Elementary; Gregory Waylon, Eubank Elementary; Ella Smith, Eubank Elementary; James Osborne, Eubank Elementary; Patrick Duncan, Eubank Elementary; Levi H. Russell, Eubank Elementary; Olivia Burton, Pulaski Elementary; Iris Watkins, Eubank Elementary; Hannah Weatherly, Burnside Elementary; and Jack Weatherly, Burnside Elementary.

The local artists participating in the program this year included the following: Garry Harrison, Katey Whitt (former SCC art student), Lakia Stout (former SCC art student), Emily Williams (former SCC art student), Kursty Little, Mark Estes, Jennifer Kosakowski and Delilah Young.

The two-month exhibit at The Center for Rural Development will include individual artwork by each student, a collaborative piece by the student and the local artist and an individual work by the local artist.

“We have been partnering with VSA Kentucky for the past five years to produce this fascinating art show,” said Libbey. “It is always a very rewarding and enjoyable experience. Each time we do this the local artists find the experience of working with these young artists to be refreshing and fun.”

The Side-By-Side project is a partnership between The Center for Rural Development, VSA Kentucky, and Somerset Community College. VSA Kentucky receives funding from the U.S Department of Education.

Now, that agreement has recently been expanded into an official two plus two agreement for business administration students transferring from SCC to WKU.

Lois McWhorter, associate dean of business and professional services at SCC, said the agreement applies to all present students and past graduates of any college within the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS).

“This is an excellent opportunity for SCC and all KCTCS students to start at their local community college and finish with their business degree from the Gordon Ford College of Business at Western Kentucky University,” said McWhorter. “We have worked hard to make this partnership work for the students, even including scholarship opportunities and an uncomplicated path of transfer.”

The agreement, called the Plus 2 Business Administration option, is offered completely online and grants a Bachelor of Science in Management (business administration track). The program consists of coursework in accounting, computer information systems, economics, finance, management and marketing to deepen a student’s understanding of the world of business and develop his or her managerial skill set.

WKU’s business programs are accredited by AACSB International, the world’s premier accrediting body. Graduates from these programs are highly sought after by employers and graduate schools.

A minimum of 120 credit hours between KCTCS and WKU are required for the degree with 42 hours of upper-division level credit. The program can be completed on a full or part-time schedule and again is completely online.

Yancey, a native of Science Hill, earned more than $6,500 in scholarship funds through the two awards, the Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Gold Scholar program and the Guistwhite Scholarship program, both of which are administered by the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.

2013 Guistwhite Scholarship

Twenty Phi Theta Kappa members were selected as 2013 Guistwhite Scholarship recipients and will be recognized and invited to a special reception during Phi Theta Kappa’s Annual Convention in San Jose, California, April 4-6. Each year $100,000 in scholarship funds are awarded, with each Guistwhite Scholar receiving a $5,000 scholarship for baccalaureate studies and a commemorative medallion.

Guistwhite Scholars are chosen based on academic achievement, leadership accomplishment, and engagement in Phi Theta Kappa programs. The 20 recipients for 2013 were selected by a panel of independent judges from more than 1,800 applicants to receive this scholarship, the second highest offered by Phi Theta Kappa.

The Guistwhite Scholar Program is named in honor of the late Dr. Jack Guistwhite and his widow, Margaret Guistwhite. Dr. Guistwhite established the first designated transfer scholarship for Phi Theta Kappa members at Florida Atlantic University in 1975. The Guistwhite Scholarships were established by Phi Theta Kappa in 1992.

“Dr. Jack Guistwhite planted a seed in 1975 that resulted in more than 750 colleges and universities designating transfer scholarships for thousands of Phi Theta Kappa members,” said Phi Theta Kappa’s Executive Director Dr. Rod A. Risley. “It is fitting that we continue to honor our students who excel in scholarship and leadership in Phi Theta Kappa as Guistwhite Scholars in memory of Jack and in honor of his wife Margaret. Through their generosity and those who support scholarships through the Phi Theta Kappa Foundation, these students will receive funds to help them complete their degrees.”

The 2013 Guistwhite Scholars are: Jessica Abfalter, Northwestern Michigan College, Michigan; Yannel Celestrin, Miami Dade College, Florida; Miranda Davis, Dyersburg State Community College, Tennessee; Katherine Dunklee, Howard Community College, Maryland; Erica Gianakon, Hutchinson Community College, Kansas; Mayra Gutierrez, Central Arizona College, Arizona; Olga Homonchuk, Normandale Community College, Minnesota; Phillippe Ly, Orange Coast College, California; Taren Nance, Wor-Wic Community College, Maryland; Angelina Nance, Clark State Community College, Ohio; Devin Oakes, Mesa Community College, Arizona; Deanna Pack, Jefferson State Community College, Alabama; Kristen Regehr, Hutchinson Community College, Kansas; Christine Sim, Delgado Community College, Louisiana; Awais Spall, Mt. San Antonio College, California; Kim Stingo, Palm Beach State College, Florida; Jacqueline Watkins, Kirkwood Community College, Missouri; Tracy Weimer, Lane Community College, Oregon; Joshua Yancey, Somerset Community College, Kentucky; and Ashley Young, Hillsborough Community College, Florida

2013 Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Gold Scholar

The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation sponsors the Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team program by recognizing 50 Gold, 50 Silver and 50 Bronze Scholars, and providing nearly $200,000 in scholarships annually. Each Gold Scholar receives a $1,500 scholarship and a special medallion.

Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society administers the Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Program and recognizes Coca-Cola Community College scholars during All-State Community College Academic Team Recognition ceremonies held in 38 states. Student scholars also receive recognition locally during ceremonies held on campus and internationally for those who are able to attend Phi Theta Kappa’s Annual Convention.

Community college presidents or their designated nominators may submit no more than two nominations per campus for this award. An independent panel of judges considers outstanding academic rigor, grade point average, academic and leadership awards, and engagement in college and community service in the selection process.

“We thank the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation for their vote of confidence in community college students by investing in their futures,” said Dr. Rod Risley, Executive Director of Phi Theta Kappa. “Their support is especially welcome during this challenging economic climate, as more and more community college students need additional resources to help them complete their degrees.”

“The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation has a long history of providing financial assistance to outstanding students at community colleges,” said J. Mark Davis, President of the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation. “We are proud to partner with Phi Theta Kappa and make it possible for deserving students to achieve their educational goals.”

Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, headquartered in Jackson, is the largest honor society in American higher education with more than 1,280 chapters on two-year and community college campuses in all 50 of the United States, Canada, Germany, Peru, the Republic of Palau, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, the British Virgin Islands, the United Arab Emirates and U.S. territorial possessions.
Flynn is best known for his 11-year Major League career with five teams, including the 1975-1976 world champion Cincinnati Reds and the New York Mets, where he won a Gold Glove Award for fielding excellence in 1980. Flynn, a second baseman through most of his career, played from 1975 to 1985.

Flynn was involved in one of the most famous trades in baseball history, as he was one of four Reds swapped for future Hall-of-Fame pitcher Tom Seaver in June of 1977, after the eventual 311-game-winner became involved in a contract dispute with the Mets. The New York media dubbed the trade of the popular Seaver the "Midnight Massacre," and Flynn--along with the three other players sent to New York--was faced with the daunting task of replacing a three-time Cy Young Award winner known as "The Franchise."

Flynn, a native of Lexington, attended the University of Kentucky on a basketball scholarship in the late 1960s. He was attending Somerset Community College in 1971 when, after participating in a try-out camp with the Cincinnati Reds, he was signed to a minor league contract.

After his baseball career ended, Flynn went on to become the head of Kentucky's Anti-Drug Program and has, for the past 15 years, been a banking officer with Central Bank in Lexington. He has also served as a motivational speaker and has provided color commentary for broadcasts of UK baseball games. He has been involved with a number of charities and is co-chairman of the Children's Charity of the Bluegrass Annual Golf Classic.

As the guest of the SCC Journalism Club, Flynn will be interviewed by club members and sponsors about his life and career, with particular focus on his interactions with the media over the years.

"From his time on Adolph Rupp's UK basketball team, through his baseball career, and in the years since, Doug Flynn has dealt with media attention of various levels and types---sometimes wanted, sometimes unwanted," said Journalism Club sponsor Jeff Harris, an associate professor of English at SCC. "As a result of all these experiences, his perspective on the media is likely unique, and I think our students will benefit from hearing his stories and how they have shaped his views."
On this day, Somerset Community College and each of the other 15 KCTCS colleges and the system office will partner with churches in their communities to host information fairs for prospective college students and their families.

SCC will sponsor Super Sunday in Somerset, East Bernstadt, Richmond and Manchester. All events will be February 24.

Super Sunday will be held at the following places:

• Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist, 99 Bourbon Road, Somerset, KY 42501 at 11:30 a.m.
• Altamont Baptist Church, 1110 Littontown Road, East Bernstadt, KY 40676 at 11:15 a.m.
• First Baptist Church, 300 Francis Street, Richmond, KY 40745 at 11 a.m.
• St. Paul AME Church, Town Branch Road, Manchester, KY 40962 at 11 a.m.

At each event, a representative from SCC will speak during the regular church service and others will be available to assist potential students and their families after the service.

Higher education for south central Kentucky begins at Somerset Community College, and so it is a vital part of the SCC mission to increase the educational opportunities for people of color, including African-Americans and Latinos. Super Sunday is a statewide initiative intended to increase the college-going rate of students of color. SCC will partner with these churches to reach out to parents and students to promote higher education.

“We want students to know, yes, you can go to college. Yes, you can get a college degree. And yes, you can have a high paying job. Many potential students are aware of their educational opportunities, but they simply have questions about how to access the pipeline. Super Sunday will show them how to navigate the admission and financial aid process, as well as provide additional information about the educational possibilities that exist,” said SCC President and CEO Dr. Jo Marshall.

This is the third year Somerset Community College has hosted a Super Sunday event. In subsequent years, the program will be expanded to target students from other racial and ethnic groups, such as the emerging Latino population, as well as more church partners.

Of the total undergraduate students who attended Kentucky public colleges in the fall of 2009, 48.9 percent of African-American students attended KCTCS. Although the number of African-American students attending a KCTCS college has grown, KCTCS wants to further increase enrollment and Super Sunday is intended to support this mission.

“SCC has a strong commitment to diversity and ensuring every citizen in our region has the educational opportunities they need to succeed. As a system of open access institutions, it is our responsibility to make everyone aware that a college education is within their reach,” said Dr. Marshall. “We are thankful to the leaders of these congregations for their commitment to this cause and for welcoming us into their services.”

The awards program was created in 2005 and is a project of the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, the Kentucky Society for Human Resource Management (KYSHRM) and Best Companies Group.

This statewide survey and awards program was designed to identify, recognize and honor the best places of employment in Kentucky, benefiting the state's economy, its workforce and businesses. The Best Places to Work in Kentucky 2013, Large Companies (250+ employees) list is made up of 40 companies. Seventy-four companies were named in total. This is the eighth year that Somerset Community College has been named one of the Best Places to Work in Kentucky.

To be considered for participation, companies had to fulfill the following eligibility requirements:

- Have at least 25 employees working in Kentucky;
- Be a for-profit or not-for-profit business or government entity;
- Be a publicly or privately held business;
- Have a facility in the state of Kentucky; and
- Must be in business a minimum of 1 year.

Companies from across the state entered the two-part process to determine the Best Places to Work in Kentucky. The first part consisted of evaluating each nominated company's workplace policies, practices, and demographics. This part of the process was worth approximately 25% of the total evaluation. The second part consisted of an employee survey to measure the employee experience. This part of the process was worth approximately 75% of the total evaluation. The combined scores determined the top companies and the final ranking. Best Companies Group managed the overall registration and survey process in Kentucky and also analyzed the data and used their expertise to determine the final rankings.

Somerset Community College will be recognized and honored at the Best Places to Work in Kentucky Annual Awards Dinner on Tuesday, April 16, 2013 at the Lexington Convention Center. The final rankings will be announced at the event. A magazine recognizing the winners and their final rankings will be released for statewide distribution at that time.

Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College (formerly Bowling Green Technical College) was also named to the list as a top small/medium company.
