Scholarship Sources and Types

Scholarships can come from a variety of sources.  Here are some examples of scholarship sources:

  • External Scholarship – An external scholarship is funding that is awarded by and received from an organization other than Somerset Community College.
  • Internal Scholarship – An internal scholarship is funding that is awarded by Somerset Community Colleges.  Internal scholarships can be funded through donations (Endowed & Annual Gift scholarships) or budget allocations (KCTCS scholarships or other SCC Institutional scholarships).

There are two main types of scholarships: Academic and Need-based.

  • Academic - Academic scholarships are based solely on merit and does not contain the criterion of financial need.
  • Need-based – Need-based scholarships may contain academic or merit criteria, however, they are based primarily on the student’s financial need.
