In preparation for the upcoming Somerset Community College/Eastern Kentucky PRIDE Earth Day Celebration on Sunday, April 21, students in a special topics biology class and the Drawing I class at SCC painted rain barrels that will be given away during the event.
Shown, Kay Stonecypher of Somerset (left) and Amber Brake (right) of Monticello show off their barrels. Stonecypher, who has a degree from the University of Louisville in Studio Art, is attending SCC in preparation for a career in psychology and art therapy. Brake is majoring in environmental science.
The rain barrel project is supported by a grant from the Southeast Environmental Education Alliance, which will allow 15 lucky community members to leave the Earth Day celebration with a beautifully painted barrel. Everyone attending will receive a free ticket for the drawings, and winners must be present at the time of the drawing and able to take the barrel home that day. Five barrels will be given away at 2, 3 and 4 p.m. on April 21.
The Annual Earth Day Celebration will be from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and will feature a fun and educational day packed full of activities, wildlife exhibits and green demonstrations. Activities will be held on the SCC Somerset Campus North, located at 808 Monticello Street, Somerset. The event is free and open to the public.
