Somerset Community College named a “2013 Great College to Work For” by The Chronicle of Higher Education
Jul 23, 2013 - | 04:33 PM -
Somerset Community College (SCC) has once again been named a "Great College to Work For," according to a new survey by The Chronicle of Higher Education. SCC is the only community college in the Commonwealth of Kentucky to receive this honor.
The results, which will be released this week in The Chronicle’s fifth annual report on The Academic Workplace, are based on a survey of more than 44,000 employees at 300 colleges and universities.
In all, only 97 of the 300 institutions achieved “Great College to Work For” recognition for specific best practices and policies. Results are reported for small, medium, and large institutions, with Somerset Community College included among the medium institutions with enrollment between 3,000 and 9,999 students.
Somerset Community College is one of only 21 community colleges across the nation named to the list of “Great Colleges to Work For” and the only one in Kentucky. Two four-year colleges or universities in Kentucky made the list. These are Frontier Nursing University and Murray State University.
Somerset Community College is also named as a 2013 Honor Roll school. Only 42 of the 97 institutions were given this distinction by scoring high in more than four categories. SCC won honors in seven categories this year:
• Compensation and Benefits
• Confidence in Senior Leadership
• Facilities, Workspace and Security
• Job Satisfaction
• Professional/Career-Development Programs
• Supervisor or Department Chair Relationship
• Work/Life Balance
“This is a wonderful acknowledgment for SCC but our real goal is not the recognition. Our goal is to help our students succeed whether they are transferring to a four year college or entering the workforce. It is gratifying to know that my fellow employees enjoy coming to work every day and that they feel valued as an important member of the SCC team,” said SCC President and CEO, Dr. Jo Marshall.
“It’s easier to be a great workplace during good times, but it’s when times are tough that the commitment to workplace quality really gets tested," said Richard K. Boyer, principal and managing partner of ModernThink LLC, the human capital consulting firm that surveyed and analyzed the results. "Those institutions, like Somerset Community College, that measure up during times of economic hardship reinforce their already strong cultures and put even more distance between them and their peer institutions for whom they compete for talent.”
