Students from Somerset Community College’s Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) Program recently participated in Therapy Alliance Day at the state capitol in Frankfort.

Members of the Kentucky Physical Therapy Association joined forces with the Kentucky Occupational Therapy Association and the Kentucky Speech Hearing Association to inform state legislators about the importance of insuring adequate consumer access to therapy services.

The group met with Senator Chris Girdler to discuss patient access, reimbursement and other challenges facing the physical therapy profession.  Specifically discussed were Medicaid and the challenges of the current payment system.  Senator Girdler encouraged the students and his constituents to remain active and contact legislators about future issues and concerns.

“This was a great opportunity for our students to become involved and better understand the legislative process,” said Claudette Prather, PTA instructor.  “The issues that our students discussed with Senator Girdler today will have an impact upon the profession and their careers in the future.”

Prather, who is an active member of the Kentucky Physical Therapy Association, served as the college’s coordinator for participation in the event.  Students in attendance included: Brittany Hillard, London; Ashley Hopper, Corbin; Donna Mosby, Burkesville; Candice Tye, Richmond; and Jami Vaughn, London.  The group is presently making plans to participate in the 2015 event and possibly host an event for state legislators on the Somerset campus in the future.
