Physical Therapist Assistant
This 2-year program prepares the student to become a skilled assistant working under the supervision of a physical therapist. The curriculum combines general and technical education courses that allow the student to obtain the Associate of Applied Science Degree. Various health agencies are utilized for clinical experience.
What can I do with this degree?
The Physical Therapist Assistant Program prepares graduates to assist the Physical Therapist in providing patient services for the alleviation of physical impairment and restoration of function. Graduates are prepared to take the national certification examination for the Physical Therapist Assistant.
When and How do I get started with this degree?
The following materials must be on file in the Program Coordinator’s office before April 1:
- A copy of the application for admission to SCC
- A copy of transcripts of all high school and post-secondary education
- Documentation of at least 8 hours observation and/or work experience in physical therapy. At least 4 hours must occur in an acute care physical therapy department.
- A copy of ACT examination report
- Letter written to the PTA Program Coordinator stating intent to be admitted to the program
- Documentation of attendance at a pre-admission conference

Admission Criteria
Selection of students for admission to the Physical Therapist Assistant Program will be made by the President of the College or the President’s designee following consideration of the recommendations of an Admission Committee.
- Preference may be given to applicants who demonstrate above average standing in high school or on the General Education Development Examination (GED).
- Preference may be given to applicants with an ACT composite score of 19 or higher.
- Preference may be given to applicants who have completed 12 or more credit hours in the approved curriculum with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher from any accredited college.
- Preference may be given to Kentucky residents and applicants from the community college service area.
Technical Standards
- Adequate visual acuity
- Adequate auditory perception
- Sufficient strength, gross motor, and fine motor coordination
- Sufficient verbal and written communication skills
Additional Criteria
Upon admittance the student must submit the following materials prior to beginning clinical experiences.
- Evidence of receiving the Hepatitis B vaccine series or a vaccine declination form
- TB skin test or chest X-Ray
- Immunization records
- Current CPR certification
Student Responsibilities
In addition to tuition, students are responsible for transportation to the various clinical sites, professional liability insurance, books, supplies and uniforms. Any student seeking financial assistance should contact the Financial Aid Office.
