Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education (AAS - GOTS)
The Early Childhood Education Program at Somerset Community College educates individuals to provide quality care and education for young children. This training prepares early childhood professionals to promote and support children’s physical, social, emotional, language, and intellectual development.
The tasks of the early childhood professional are varied, interesting, and
exciting as he or she works to support and complement the family in its child
rearing tasks. Those working with young children are required to take on
many roles during the course of a work day. From moment to moment, the roles
could swing between nurse, teacher, friend, janitor, clerk, cook and many
others. Rewards, excitement and challenge are never lacking for the dedicated
early childhood professional.
Persons who make the best early childhood educators have the following characteristics:
• Commitment to making a difference in the world
• Genuine concern for the welfare of children
• Tolerance for messy activities
• A child-like excitement and interest in the world
• A desire to learn and develop professionally
The field of early childhood education offers opportunities for nontraditional
students. A great need for male role models and care givers exists in this
occupation.
