Cosmetology Program
The Cosmetology Program at Somerset Community College includes not less than 1,800 hours of instruction and 135 hours in applied academic courses totalling 1935 clock hours and 63 credit hours.
Along with classroom theory, the student receives hands-on experience in the laboratory area. Upon successful completion of the prescribed program, the graduate is prepared to take the Apprentice Cosmetology Examination. After a six-month apprenticeship, under direct supervision of a licensed cosmetologist, the apprentice is required to sit for an additional state board examination to become a licensed cosmetologist.
Somerset Community College’s Cosmetology program is licensed and the curriculum is approved by the Kentucky Board of Hairdressers and Cosmetologists.

What can I do with this program?
Upon successful completion of the prescribed program, the graduate is prepared to take the Apprentice Cosmetology Examination. After successfully passing the practical and written Kentucky state board exams, the student is a licensed apprentice cosmetologist. Licensed apprentice cosmetologist must serve a six-month apprenticeship under the direct supervision of a licensed cosmetologist.
Somerset Community College’s Cosmetology Program is licensed and the curriculum is approved by the Kentucky Board of Hairdressers and Cosmetologist.
When and How do I get started with this degree?
This program admits students each semester. The following materials must be on file in the Admissions Office:
- Application for admission to SCC
- Official high school transcript or passing GED official score report
- Transcripts of all post-secondary education or training

Student Responsibilities
In addition to tuition, students are responsible for books, uniforms and cosmetology kits. Any student seeking financial assistance should contact the Financial Aid Office.
