SCC Choral Groups

Somerset Community Choir / SCC College Chorus
Mondays 6:00-7:50 p.m. in Stoner - 102
The larger of the two choirs at SCC, the 50-voice Somerset Community Choir / SCC College Chorus is open to adult community members as well as SCC faculty, staff and students. Community singers participate in Somerset Community Choir with no dues or registration fees; SCC students may enroll in College Chorus for 1 credit hour. The group performs both accompanied and a cappella choral repertoire from the Renaissance through the twentieth century.

Vocal Ensemble
Mondays 8:00-8:50 p.m.
Thursdays 5:30-7:20 p.m. in Stoner - 102
Vocal Ensemble is a select a cappella group of singers who rehearse and perform exciting and challenging choral repertoire such as madrigals, chansons and other novelty pieces from the Renaissance through the twentieth century. The ensemble represents SCC as it travels and performs throughout the Somerset community and also internationally. Entrance is by audition and consent of instructor.

SCC’s Vocal Ensemble successfully participated in an international choral festival held in Verona, Italy, April 18-23 2006. The choir brought home SCC’s first international award, a bronze trophy. Vocal Ensemble is returning to Italy to participate in the festival in March of 2008.

Upcoming Performances

A Taste of Broadway

Friday, November 9 and Saturday, November 10, 7:30 p.m. Meece Auditorium
The evening will feature Broadway choruses, solos, duets and trios. Also featured will be deserts and beverages prepared and served by SCC’s culinary arts department.
Tickets, which include admission and food and beverages, are $10.00.

A Choral Christmas Concert
Friday, December 7, 7:30 p.m. First Christian Church; 1115 Hwy 39, Somerset
The concert will feature choral Christmas selections from the Renaissance through the 20th century performed by SCC’s College Chorus and Vocal Ensemble and the Somerset Community Choir. Also featured are solos and an audience sing-a-long of beloved Christmas songs and carols. Tickets $10.00

As these events historically sell out, we suggest obtaining advance tickets. Advance tickets can be purchased at SCC’s Box Office—Stoner Hall 108 on the north campus. SCC Music Staff

Bob Hekel, Music Coordinator

Founder and conductor of SCC’s choral groups and the Somerset Community Choir, Bob Hekel has been teaching and directing music at SCC since fall 2003. Bob came to SCC from California where he was conductor / artistic director of The Sand Pipers, a renowned professional choral ensemble. He was also the conductor of the choirs as well as an adjunct music professor at College of the Desert in Palm Desert, California. He holds a Master’s degree in music with emphasis in choral conducting and vocal pedagogy. In spring of 2006, Bob took SCC Vocal Ensemble to an international choral festival in Verona, Italy and brought back SCC’s first international award, a bronze trophy.
